Integrated Planning - Knowledge Sharing

Customer

An international, integrated energy company operating worldwide with assets and businesses in nearly 40 countries.

The Task

In 2007, the China Operations Team did a review of Planning Processes and Procedures that prevailed in the UK Operating Business Unit. The exercise resulted in the decision to adopt the UK's processes and approach. At that time, it was estimated to have "shortened its Integrated Asset Planning process development by approximately 3 months".

In the subsequent 12 months the architecture was defined, the enterprise structure was built as were the MS Excel import tools for interface between the Maintenance Management System (SAP) and Primavera.

With the China Operations Team in the final stages of preparing for Operational readiness for the start-up of its phased development, the team needed help to improve their Integrated Plan.

Our Approach

The Facilitators associate who had helped the China team from his UK role during the development phase, travelled to China for 10 days to assist the local operations team to achieve two objectives:

1) To extract all the data from the existing stand-alone schedules (Primavera files and standalone Microsoft Project Plans) - and structure the data to import into the new Primavera Enterprise Planning Package

2) Having imported the data, to create standard reports to demonstrate the effect that the planned activities would have on the various Platform POB limitations.

The Result

 • China operations were able to efficiently adopt the UK Integrated Planning [1] model which has a strong track record of success - providing them with the ability to forecast long-term resource requirements and the impact that future work has on limited resources
 • The exercise culminated with a roll-out of the new integrated plan and the projected offshore POB histograms to the management team.

"Having adopted the principles of the UK model, could only ever have been a starting point for us. Getting the Facilitators associate to come over to China, helped us gain the insight into the subtleties of how the planning tools work, based on the experiences that the UK have gained since they introduced their enterprise planning approach, 18-months ago." China Planning Lead
