Integrated Enterprise Planning

Customer

One of the world's largest integrated energy companies, who conduct business in more than 100 countries. They are engaged in every aspect of the oil and natural gas industry, including exploration and production, manufacturing, marketing and transportation, chemicals manufacturing and sales, geothermal, and power generation and also currently investing in renewables and advanced technologies.

Thailand, the centre for this initiative, has been their largest producing area globally since 2005.

The Task

A number of processes needed to be developed and standardised across the 6 major assets.

Integrated or "Enterprise" planning was one of the key processes identified to improve asset performance, delivery against business plan and reduce wastage. An initiative called Integrated Offshore Execution Planning (iOEP) was kicked off in October 2005 and Microsoft Project Enterprise 2007 was the chosen planning application.

Our Approach

Facilitators International provided consultancy support to assist with development and implementation of the enterprise planning process. This involved an initial pilot in a single asset followed by development and roll-out across all 6 assets.

Four main challenges faced the iOEP team

 • Customisation and deployment of the planning applications
 • Recruitment and training of the asset planners
 • Development/deployment of the enterprise planning processes
 • Establishing the behaviours that enable the process to become sustainable

The Facilitators' consultant assisted in all of these areas by:

 • Engaging with senior management and functional managers to ensure their support and promotion of enterprise planning within the business
 • Identification of the functional requirements of the chosen planning application and associated tools to support the data processing and reporting needs
 • Training the planning community through a series of training seminars which were open to the entire (200+) planning resource pool
 • Identifying key competencies and recruiting individuals with transferable skills from the local labour market
 • Providing training, mentoring and coaching to both new recruits and existing staff in planning theory, process and operation.
 • Enabling behavioural change through a variety of two-way communication activities.

The Result

 • More projects delivered when needed, more production assured
 • Full alignment of activity and business planning leading to increased business plan performance
 • Increased rate of project delivery against activity plan
 • Identification of longer term cross asset synergies leading to cost savings
 • Local staff were employed and developed - saving money and increasing sustainability
 • Knowledge transfer
 • Greatly increased visibility leading to improved overall control
